Do You See What I See - Thoughts on Week 9

 - StingRay -

November 6, 2004

You Might want to Look Elsewhere Before You Start These Guys

Matt Hasselbeck (QB - Seattle)

Matt Hasselbeck was supposed to have a breakout season but so far he is not getting it done for fantasy owners.  Hasslebeck has been careless with the football and his receivers having been dropping passes all season long. So far through seven games Hasselbeck has 8 touchdown passes and 9 interceptions.  In his last three games he has thrown two touchdowns and seven interceptions.  The Seahawks won last week because they took the ball out of Hasselbeck’s hands and gave the ball to Shaun Alexander.  This week the match-up against the 49ers is great except that Hasselbeck could be without his number one receiver Darrell Jackson. If Jackson doesn’t play you shouldn’t play Hasselbeck.

Tom Brady (QB - New England)

Brady is a victim of a lack of receivers.  The Patriots have no single star at receiver but Brady spreads the field and hits the open receiver.  Since week one when Brady threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns he has not had all of his receivers available to him. Deion Branch and Troy Brown have missed time even though Brown returned last week. This week the Patriots could be without their new number one receiver David Givens. The first four games Brady threw nine touchdowns and four interceptions. The last three games Brady has thrown four touchdowns and three interceptions.

Laveranues Coles (WR - Washington)

Coles leads the team in receptions (38) and yards (452) but after seven games he has failed to catch a touchdown pass.  Rod Gardner appears to be the guy Mark Brunnell looks for in the end zone.  The Redskins as a team have eight touchdown passes in seven games and five have gone to Gardner.  Another reason you should shy away from Coles is that Mark Brunnell is awful.  How bad is Patrick Ramsey if he can’t replace an old and ineffective Mark Brunnell?

Kevan Barlow (RB - San Francisco)

Barlow has one 100-hundred yard rushing game on the season and last week he averaged 3.1 yards per carry and could only post 56 yards rushing against a Chicago defense that is ranked 29th against the run and gives up 139.3 yards per game on average.  If Barlow can’t produce in that situation when will he ever produce?  This week he faces a Seattle team that held him to 22 yards on 10 carries in their week 3 meeting.  If someone in your league wants him then go ahead and trade him while you can.

These Guys are playing like Super Stars

Jason Witten (TE - Dallas)

There has been much talk about how good Antonio Gates and Eric Johnson are but the one tight end who is not getting any recognition is Jason Witten. His value has skyrocketed due to the injury of Terry Glenn, the loss of Antonio Bryant and the bad hamstring of Quincy Morgan.  Witten leads the team in receptions with 39 (nine more then Keyshawn) and he has three touchdowns. In his last two games Witten has 17 receptions, 196 yards and 2 touchdowns.  If for some reason he’s still available in your league pick him up immediately!  Parcells loves to utilize the tight end and the Cowboys have a poor rushing attack and are short on receivers.  Witten will continue to produce excellent numbers.

Drew Brees (QB - San Diego)

Brees was unstoppable last Sunday throwing 5 touchdowns against the Oakland Raiders. The two games prior Brees only threw for 1 touchdown.  He is getting comfortable with Keenan McCardell and Antonio Gates is a stud.  If you are in a league that penalizes for interceptions then you might want to know that Brees has been virtually mistake free.  So far this season he has 14 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.  In fact, Brees has thrown a total of one interception in his last six games.  This week Brees should be in for another good game because he faces a New Orleans passing defense that is ranked 31st in passing yards allowed and ranks 23rd in passing touchdowns allowed.  After this week’s game the Chargers are on a bye but after that he faces the Raiders again and the Chiefs. If you are struggling at the quarterback position Brees would be a nice pick up for your fantasy team.  By the way, in week 16 which is usually the Championship game in most fantasy leagues, San Diego is facing the Indianapolis Colts.

Jake Plummer (QB - Denver)

The good news for Plummer owners is that he has thrown 10 touchdowns and has averaged 284 yards the past four games.  The bad news is that in that same span he has thrown 8 interceptions.  The Broncos are on a two game skid but this week they face a Houston secondary that is ranked last in passing touchdowns allowed.  Plummer is a good quarterback to trade for because his schedule is very nice the next few weeks.  Denver plays Houston, (bye week) New Orleans, Oakland, and San Diego. If you don’t get penalized for interceptions then Plummer’s your man.

Reggie Wayne (WR - Indianapolis)

As a Reggie Wayne owner I was very worried after he shoved the “Golden Child” Peyton Manning on the sidelines two weeks ago.  How did he and Manning respond the following week?  Wayne caught six passes for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Chiefs. What was nice for Reggie's owners was that on Wayne‘s second touchdown catch he and Manning made up a play that wasn’t even in the playbook.  It seems like the two of them have made peace.  That is a big relief to all Wayne owners. Reggie leads the team in receiving yardage and has five touchdowns on the season.

KeyShawn Johnson (WR - Dallas)

KeyShawn Johnson did not score a touchdown in his first three games but since then he has been a regular visitor to the end zone.  Johnson has scored a touchdown in three out of the Cowboys’ last four games.  In fact, with his two-touchdown game last week he now has four touchdowns on the season.  Keyshawn has not had more then five touchdowns in a season since 2000 when he had 8 touchdowns. Is it possible that Keyshawn may score double-digit touchdowns for the second time in his career? Hey, anything is possible.  The Red Sox won the World Series didn’t they?

Minnesota Running Backs...I’ll be Watching Closely

Michael Bennett (RB - Minnesota)

It appears that Mewelde Moore will not play on Monday night. Tice said whoever practices the best out of Michael Bennett and Onterrio Smith will get the start Monday night though both will play.  If you drafted Michael Bennett and have been holding on to him, Monday night could be judgment day for your fantasy back. Tice told Bennett “Go win your job back” in the half of last week’s game against the Giants.  Bennett had 5 carries for 20 yards and scored a touchdown.  If he has a big game Monday night Bennett may reclaim his job as the starting running back in Minnesota.
