Freak of the Week - Week 6

The NFLFreaks Salute the True NFL Freaks

Hindsight - Derrick Mason

Prior to week 6 Mason only had one touchdown on the year, and that came way back in week 1.  On the other hand he had put up at least 98 yards in 3 of his 5 starts, although his scoring was tarnished by weeks with only 47 and 4 yards.

Then came the big explosion.  Before the first quarter was even over Derrick had scored on receptions of 32 and 46 yards.  He added a 50 yard touchdown in the 4th quarter and finished with 6 catches for 177 yards and 3 scores.

As McNair continues to ascend the steps to the throne of fantasy king, Mason should continue to rise with him.  He won't score like this every week, but last Sunday he was a Freak.

StingRay - Torry Holt

For the past couple of years we have been waiting for Holt to turn into the number 1, dominant receiver in St. Louis.  Every year he has been solid but fallen short of spectacular.  This year he has come to play every week and put up great numbers.

This week he kicked it up yet another notch.  His 11 receptions for 161 yards and 2 touchdowns on Monday Night Football brings his weekly averages up to 107.4 yards and 1 touchdown per game.  The most impressive part about it is that he's really only played 4 games (any game where your quarterback can't hold on to the ball long enough to say receiver, let alone throw to one, shouldn't count).  Holt is the real deal and has showed us why this season, and especially this week.

CrunchTime - Brad Johnson

Some may have thought the Bucs won the Super Bowl on defense and coaching alone. However, it has become apparent that there is another, very important, piece to that puzzle. Their quarterback.

Johnson has shown that he is not just a careful quarterback, but a smart, accurate, productive, and consistent one as well. He has put up at least 20 fantasy points in each week and has posted over 34 in the past two. Last week he neared the 40 point mark by throwing for 268 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Not only that, his quarterback rating was a mind-boggling 140! Only Manning and McNair have put up more fantasy points and they have both played and extra game. Johnson is shaping up to be the steal of the draft and is definitely my Freak of the Week.
