Freak of the Week - Week 5

The NFLFreaks Salute the True NFL Freaks

StingRay - Eric Johnson

If you don't know who Eric Johnson is then you better ask somebody. Johnson is the number one tight end in fantasy football. He leads the NFL in receptions (41), and he is third in the league in yardage (460).

Johnson caught 13 passes on Sunday for 162 yards and a touchdown. Is it a fluke? I think not. In week 4 Johnson had 10 receptions for 113 yards. When everyone was preparing for their drafts Tony Gonzalez was the clear cut number one tight end in fantasy football. There was a lot of hype about Kellen Winslow and a healthy Jeremy Shockey in fantasy circles. Well, all of those high draft picks are not paying the dividends that Johnson is. Eric, you are my Freak of the week!

StingRay (x2) - Antonio Gates

Gates was a sleeper tight end and our own Sandman predicted that he would be a top 5 tight end in a preseason article. I took Sandman's advice for once and drafted Gates in two of my leagues and I'm very happy about that pick.

Antonio blew up in week 1 with 8 receptions for 123 yards in a win against the Texans. Weeks 2 & 3 Gates was somewhat quiet with a total of 8 receptions for 69 yards. In weeks 4 & 5 Gates totaled 15 receptions for 150 yards and three touchdowns.  In week 5 he put smiles on his owners faces with 8 receptions for 93 yards and two scores.

Gates is 4th in the NFL in receptions and tied for 7th in touchdown receptions with 3. He is the number two tight end in fantasy football and he deserves his shout out as a Freak of the week!

Smokin' Joe - Reuben Droughns

Reuben had the game of his life on Sunday. He had over 200 yards combined (193 rushing;18 receiving) after only rushing for 97 yards in his first four years in the league. The Broncos were in a dogfight with the Panthers and Droughns came up big. He allowed Denver to control the clock which kept the ball out of Delhomme's hands. It also allowed his defense to remain fresh so they could be strong at the end of the game.  Outstanding job Reuben, you are my Freak of the Week.

CrunchTime - Marc Bulger

Usually when someone throws 3 picks you wouldn’t expect to call them a freak. Or if you did you’d probably be using it in a context that would bring the likes of Ryan Leaf to mind. But while Martz often appears to be asleep at the wheel, his offense does provide his players plenty of chance for redemption.

This week Bulger took advantage of those extra chances. Most players don’t have the staying power to throw 3 picks, get knocked around, get utterly befuddled, and then lead one of the best comebacks of his career.

With the Rams all but defeated I’m sure many of you were searching for more entertaining television. The Seahawks defense was spreading out into some semblance of the prevent the Bulger began picking them apart. The end result was a salvaged, and somewhat impressive, fantasy outing of 325 yards passing and 3 TDs with another on the ground (and of course those 3 picks).
