Freak of the Week - Week 8

The NFLFreaks Salute the True NFL Freaks

Hindsight - Tom Brady

In 2006 Brady has been the model of consistency.  In our scoring system he hasn't scored lower than 17 points or higher than 23.  Nothing spectacular from the 2005 top NFL passer, but serviceable.

In week eight however, Brady flashed us what he can do when Belichick takes off the handcuffs.  The Pats were facing the top rushing defense in the NFL, so they simply unleashed Brady and a spread offense.

Brady answered the challenge, completing 29 passes on 43 attempts.  He amassed 372 passing yards and four touchdowns, all of which were to different receivers.  In fact he completed passes to 10 different receivers in the game, completely foiling any attempt by the Vikings to guess where he was going with the ball.

In fantasy terms, that is a 42 point day, and almost certainly a win for the owners wise enough to play him this week.  For more than doubling his average fantasy score (20.3) Tom deserves a Freak of the Week nomination.

StingRay - LaDanian Tomlinson

Tomlinson continues to dominate fantasy and on Sunday he was at it again. LaDainain carried the ball 25 times for 183 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He also hauled in 57 yards receiving and a touchdown pass.

Tomlinson is off to a fantastic start this season having scored 11 touchdowns in only 7 games.  Let’s just hope that he doesn’t wear down like last year when he was horrible during the fantasy playoffs.

Smokin' Joe - Ahman Green

Green was once a top five back but his knee and thigh kept him out of 11 games last year and slowed his progress this preseason. The last few weeks he has returned to his old form.  He has two 100 yard rushing games in a row and 3 touchdowns over the last 2 weeks (Including his first 2 touchdown game in two years - The numbers were 106 yards rushing, 27 yards receiving and 2 rushing touchdowns.)

Not the best performance of the week but the best by a back not named LT or LJ.

The Sandman - Larry Johnson

During the preseason everyone had their opinion on which running back should be ranked number one overall. LaDainian Tomlinson had a new quarterback, Shaun Alexander lost Steve Hutchinson and Johnson lost Willie Roaf. Of the bunch Tomlinson has been the best but this week Johnson reminded everyone why he was in the discussion.

Johnson had a huge day, 33 carries for 155 yards – 2 receptions for 26 yards and 4 touchdowns. By the Freaks scoring system that is over 40 points.  Unfortunately for me I went against Johnson in our league and despite scoring over 100 points I suffered a loss. While I hated to lose, I have to give Johnson his props.
