Freak of the Week - Week 5

The NFLFreaks Salute the True NFL Freaks

StingRay - Antonio Gates

All of you who jumped up on draft day to get Antonio Gates need to pat yourselves on the back after another tremendous performance by the All Pro tight end.  Gates had 7 receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown in week 5.

Gates has had 3 100-yard receiving games in 5 weeks and is second in the league in receptions with 40.  Antonio is one star who is not letting down his owners.

Smokin' Joe - Kris Brown

Brown was 5 for 5 on field goal attempts Sunday as his Texans squeaked out a victory against the Dolphins.  I know what you are saying, big deal that a kicker made a few fields goals.  However, he made field goals of 20, 43, 54, 54 and he topped of a great night by kicking a 57 yarder with 8 seconds left to win the game.

A 30 point night for a Kicker is definitely a “Freak of the Week” type performance.

CrunchTime - Phillip Rivers

The Chargers have been reeling and there've been obvious troubles in the clubhouse.  This week they had an opportunity to try and right the ship but they had to travel to Denver to do it.  Rivers led the way with absurd production given the number of times he threw the ball.  On only 13 completions he was able to tally 270 yards through the air.  Additionally, two of those passes went for touchdowns and would have translated into a solid outing for him. Fortunately for Rivers owners he tacked on a rushing touchdown as well for one of the top performances of the week.

The Sandman - Kris Brown

This week I faced a guy who started Peyton Manning, Ron Dayne, Ernest Graham, Brandon Jacobs, Greg Jennings, Steve Smith, Chris Cooley, Kris Brown and the Ravens defense. Everyone but Earnest Graham scored a touchdown so as you can imagine it was pretty tough to beat this team.

The real salt in the wound is that his kicker, Kris Brown, was the highest point scorer on his team and that this was his bye week kicker as Shayne Graham is his normal starter.

Brown had a huge fantasy week with five fields goals (20 – 43 – 54 – 54 and 57). In most leagues 50 yard field goals get bonus points and in this league his kicker ended up with 30 points.

He outscored Frank Gore, Travis Henry, LenDale White, Jericho Cotchery and Calvin Johnson combined – all of whom I own.
