Hall of Shame - Week 5

Everybody Knows Your Name

I don't care who you are; Player, Coach, Broadcaster, Writer, you name it.  You sucked, and we're going to tell you why.

Another staff favorite, our Hall of Shame picks highlight our individual selections for the worst sports-related performers of the week.

StingRay - Larry Johnson

Larry Johnson was a consensus top 3 running back and so far this season he has yet to score a touchdown.  On Sunday at home against the Jaguars posted an all time low for Larry Johnson owners after he carried the ball 9 times for 12 yards!  He finished the game with 15 total yards.

I blame Herm Edwards as much as I do Larry since there is no excuse for Johnson not to get the bal at least 20 times as their passing game is mediocre at best.

Smokin' Joe - San Francisco 49ers Offense

I knew that they had a tough match up with the Ravens but the 49ers only managed 175 yards of total offense.  Trent Dilfer threw for only 126 yards and Frank Gore rushed for just 52 yards and they only managed SIX first downs the whole game.

Even the Kicker Joe Nedney was terrible. He missed his only attempt, a 52 yarder with less than 3 minutes remaining that would have given them the lead.  Shameful all the way around.

CrunchTime - Shaun Alexander

While people may not have expected a huge outing from Shaun againt the Steelers, they certainly didn't expect him to completely lay down.  Along with the rest of the Seahawks Alexander looked like he forgot how to play football.  His 32 yards on 14 touches (25 rushing, 7 receiving) is absolutely worthless and appears to be part of the trend of top tier backs under-performing of late.

Anyone who gets drafted in the top half of the first round has to be better than that.

The Sandman - Larry Johnson

In the preseason we noted an interesting statistic from the Kansas City Star, “Johnson carried the ball an NFL-record 416 times last season. You have undoubtedly seen the history on this, Jamaal Anderson carried the ball a record 410 times in 1998. The next season, he carried the ball just 19 times and was never the same again. James Wilder carried the ball a record 407 times in 1984. The next season, he did stay healthy but his rushing average dropped to 3.6 per carry. He was never the same after that. Eric Dickerson carried the ball 404 times in 1986. He was traded the next season. He did have two more good seasons for Indianapolis. Eddie George carried the ball 403 times in 2000. His yards-per-carry average dropped to a sad 3.0 the next year, and he was never again a Pro Bowl-caliber back. Terrell Davis carried the ball 392 times in 1998. He got hurt the next year and was never the same again.”

Well it looks like this is turning out to be a trend as Johnson has had a terrible start to the season, (84 carries for 275 and no touchdowns). This was capped by his wonderful performance this week (9 carries for 12 yards).

He missed most of the preseason and some of his failure can be attributed to that but at this point he should be back to being the L.J. of old. Instead, the talk out of Kansas City is how they need to get Priest Holmes (who hasn’t played in any games in almost two years) some more carries.
